New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
