India's surprising 0-2 series loss to South Africa in the just finished Test series has left the team reeling.
In the final match, the visiting team gave India their heaviest defeat in terms of runs, against all odds. This represented the Proteas' initial series triumph in India in a quarter-century and the host nation's second defeat at home in just a year after a 12-year invincible streak.
The positive trajectory gained during the previous half-year has almost disappeared and the futures of several players - including team coach Gautam Gambhir - are now uncertain.
Early Optimism Disappears
The new-look squad's strong showing in England this season, under a new captain, suggested a seamless changeover post the near-simultaneous exits of veterans Ashwin, Sharma, and Virat Kohli.
An easy 2-0 win over West Indies at the commencement of the home season enhanced that perception, before the Proteas came and inflicted a fell blow.
The home side were a tad unfortunate that skipper Shubman Gill suffered an injury quickly in the opening Test and was ruled out in the series. Yet that fails to account for the side of the terribly sub-par performance in both Tests against the opposition.
Some big reputations were damaged, and several players hoping for extended tenures in Tests were shown as not up to the mark - technically or mentally - for the longer format.
Concerning History
This represented the second whitewash on home soil suffered by the Indian team in just a year. In 2024, little-fancied the Kiwis had pulled off a staggering 3-0 triumph which essentially denied India a spot in the WTC final.
The fresh failure to South Africa risks harming India's chances of reaching the final of this cycle too.
After being third in the WTC table prior to the contest, India have fallen to the fifth spot. Even though nine further games are still to come, a majority are against Australia. Ordinarily, performing in familiar conditions would be a huge advantage - even when facing the powerful Australians. However the failures against New Zealand and the Proteas provide no basis for that confidence.
Causes of the Fall
India's frailty in Test cricket has been badly exposed. However, the reason India have fared so badly in Tests on home soil recently is still bewildering.
Since the turn of the century, the Indian cricket team were regarded as impregnable in red-ball cricket at home. Under sweltering weather and on tracks that favored spin bowling and benefited their players, India brooked no opposition. The odd series defeat, like in the 2012-13 season against the English, was viewed as an aberration.
Today, India look to be vulnerable at home.
Facing the Kiwis in last year and South Africa this year, the home side were defeated by their own tactics. The tracks they developed to favor their game failed miserably, as rivals capitalized on them more skillfully, outplaying the Indian batters and bowlers when it was most crucial.
What Happened?
Certain analysts propose that the Indian team is floundering in home conditions because local wickets have been changed from spinning tracks to quick wickets to prepare players to succeed in foreign conditions.
Others highlight that the Indian Premier League (IPL), in which numerous foreign cricketers participate, has taken away the surprise and difficulty subcontinental pitches would pose to them earlier.
While there is a degree of accuracy in both analyses, it does not clarify the reason India's performances on home soil have witnessed such a staggering decline.
Several Weaknesses
Most former players diagnose a complex, multi-headed problem, not only one or two factors.
Experts and participants have pointed to various flaws post the team's disappointing performance to the Proteas: underrating the rivals, poor preparation, poor choices, arrogance, regular alterations of the starting eleven, and favoring white-ball over the longer format.
This was obvious in the displays of the squad.
Players such as Rishabh Pant and Jaiswal, of whom great things were anticipated, were punished for their carelessness, while Sai Sudarshan, Reddy, and Jurel - who were aiming to establish their spot in the side - were found wanting in ability and attitude, suffering the consequences for their nonchalant approach.
A small number - Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep, Siraj and Sundar - lived up to their skill and fame - but not sufficiently to secure victories.
Coaching Scrutiny
The analysis targeted the entire setup - team selectors and backroom team were also questioned, driven by disappointed supporters and outspoken ex-cricketers. Under focus of the examination was team coach Gambhir.
